The Church – No Place for Politics

It’s election season again.  A time I don’t really care for except, I pray people will start to discern what God is saying to them in the Word about His second-most prized treasure, man.  We have heard that the church is no place for politics.  But it seems the love on Sundays become thoughtless posts during the week.  Posts on abortion and critical race theory, comments on candidates, some with disparaging or racist views.  I wish it didn’t happen, but it does every time.  Let us heed the Word, before casting our vote.

A few years back there was a very popular acronym WWJD or What Would Jesus Do?  That’s a question we should ask ourselves in everyday life, especially when it’s time to make voting decisions.  We shouldn’t choose by how we feel.  We should do so based on our education of the facts, and because it’s the right thing to do.  Most candidates don’t have platforms.  They want us to vote on what they can convince us to believe.  How do we know what’s the right thing to do?  Refer to God’s word.  Pray for His will in situations like this.  See with His eyes and act with His heart.  Abortion is a popular topic because we say we’re prolife.  But what about socio-economic programs for the poor and disadvantaged?  The lack there of kills thousands to millions every year.  Are we prolife then?  Or what about assault rifles being misused to destroy children and other images of God?  Are we prolife then?

When I read the Word of God, I see love.  I see how we are supposed to get along with each other and share what we have with others.  The bible says to lend to those in need without expecting to be repaid.  “Love your enemies! Do good to them. Lend to them without expecting to be repaid. Then your reward from heaven will be very great, and you will truly be acting as children of the Most High, for he is kind to those who are unthankful and wicked.” None of these things will happen without the love part, or a lie.  I choose Love.

We voice our opinions about things we know little to nothing about.  We don’t do the research.  We liken social media and other sources that think like we do for information.  Just as we are to test the preacher against the word, even more so should we test social media and our BFF’s.  1 Timothy 4:3-4 reads, “For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.  They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.”  Abortion, equality, immigration, race and replacement theories, any topic we’re not fond of, we find alternative media.  What if we spoke about Jesus that much or read from His word?  What if we shut down some of the arrogant or obnoxious rhetoric?  How in the world can our thoughts be so far apart, when we read the same bible and serve, hopefully, the same God.

The bible tells us to “Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.”  (Proverbs 31:8-9) and

“When a stranger sojourns with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong. You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.”  (Leviticus) 19:33-34 and

1 Timothy 5:21 reads, “I solemnly command you in the presence of God and Christ Jesus and the highest angels to obey these instructions without taking sides or showing favoritism to anyone.”

And John 7:24 tells us to, “Look beneath the surface so you can judge correctly.” So, I agree, the church is no place for politics, but I believe the Word of God should guide His people and their political decisions.  When we ask the Holy Spirit to help is see through God’s eyes, hear with His ears, make decisions according to His will, His heart, and His mind, then we can answer WWJD.
